Meet Melodye

My name is Melodye Phillips.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor- Supervisor and Certified Spiritual Director in Tyler, Texas. I am a candidate to become a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. I offer individual therapy in person at my office and online. Spiritual direction sessions are conducted in person. I have been practicing in East Texas since August 2012.

I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Abilene Christian University, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Family Studies. I moved back to East Texas and received a Master of Arts from University of Texas at Tyler in Counseling Psychology.

I have a background working with child and adolescent victims and survivors of child sexual abuse, adolescent issues, parenting issues, and play therapy. I currently focus my practice on eating disorder treatment, disordered eating, body image issues, pregnancy loss, complicated pregnancies, and postpartum mental health. Spirituality issues can be addressed in therapy sessions or through spiritual direction sessions.

*I do not act as therapist and spiritual director to the same person.*

From a clinical eating disorder to years of weight cycling to body image issues, I’m here to help you on your path to food freedom. The best way to do this is to work in a treatment approach with a non-diet dietitian and therapist team. I work from a non-diet, weight neutral, food neutral Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size approach. You can also visit My Signature Nutrition’s Instagram series on addressing the definition and nuances of Health at Every Size.

I rely heavily on components from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Internal Family Systems Model, and some aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Why Faith Food and Freedom?

Faith Food and Freedom was founded after being in private practice for a few years and realizing that there are limited non-diet, weight neutral, food neutral faith based resources. In addition to providing therapy services, I decided to start a blog, offer online courses, and one day a Bible study and book… all focused on freeing you from the prison of food and exercise obsession and body hatred so you can focus on your best, most authentic life.

Faith Food and Freedom is NOT a place to use cliche Christian platitudes to address mental health and spiritual concerns. It is not Biblical counseling. Bringing faith into mental health treatment is not about “praying away” the issue or believing that God will magically take away your struggle. Faith in therapy is learning how to move from the narrative of shame that Satan whispers in our ears regarding our emotional, mental, and physical health. It is about learning the truth of how Jesus would respond and companion along side us in these struggles.

You will not be pushed to believe a certain way. You will not be pushed to integrate faith into treatment. However, you will have the space to discuss the difficulty of faith promises and life realities- which often seem in conflict with each other.

You will have a non-judgmental, safe space to wrestle with all aspects of who you are at Faith Food and Freedom.

I was born and raised in Henderson, Texas and after getting my degree from ACU, I planted myself back in Tyler, Texas. I am married to the love of my life and we have two amazing little boys, 2 dogs, and 4 cats. My husband and I own and operate Camp Canine, a local pet service business. In my free time, you can find me baking, singing in my kitchen or in the car, watching baseball and talking fantasy baseball stats and strategy with my husband , reading, crocheting or writing on my own blog or for East Texas Moms Blog.
